US and Lebanon ask Israel to pause strikes on Hezbollah ahead of direct talks

The Lebanese government and the administration of US President Donald Trump have asked Israel to temporarily halt strikes on Hezbollah ahead of direct talks between Israel and Lebanon. This is reported by Axios with reference to sources, writes UNN.

Details

According to the publication, the parties are trying to achieve de-escalation before the meeting of the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon in Washington, which is to take place on Tuesday with the mediation of the US State Department. Lebanon proposed returning to the November 2024 ceasefire agreements and limiting strikes only to immediate threats from Hezbollah.

Israel has agreed to facilitate a peace agreement with Lebanon, but has not agreed to discuss a ceasefire with the terrorist organization Hezbollah.

— said Israeli Ambassador to the US Yehiel Leiter.

The US supports Lebanon's initiative and urges Israel to agree to a pause. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently considering the request, and there is no final decision.

Sources note that agreeing to a pause could be politically sensitive for Israel, but a short tactical break in airstrikes is being considered. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam is expected to visit Washington next week for talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
