From 2022 to 2025, France, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands purchased liquefied natural gas from russia for EUR 34.3 billion , and during the same period they sent a total of EUR 21.2 billion to Ukraine.

This is what DW magazine writes referring to the study entitled "The LNG Trap. Europe's dependence on Russia and the United States for fossil fuels", which was released on Tuesday, September 30, by the international environmental organization Greenpeace, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

"Despite their efforts, EU member states continue to import Russian fossil gas to this day," the study says. - "As gas supplies through pipelines have been reduced, tanker shipments of LNG have increased in recent years, continuing to bring Russia billions from Europe."

The report said this trade is supported by long-term supply contracts signed by several energy companies headquartered in Europe, including TotalEnergies, Shell, Naturgy and SEFE, which have secured and will continue to supply gas from russia to Europe for years to come.

The study says that the main russian LNG supplier to Europe is Yamal LNG.

According to Greenpeace, from 2022 to 2024, its revenue from fuel sales to Europe amounted to USD 40 billion, as a result of which Yamal LNG paid approximately USD 9.5 billion in taxes to the russian budget.

With this money, russia could theoretically finance the production of 9.5 million 152 mm artillery shells, or 271,000 Shahed drones, or 2,686 T-90M battle tanks, the authors calculate.

The measures included in the 19th package of EU anti-military sanctions against russia, presented on September 19 by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, include a ban on imports of russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU from January 2027 and a complete ban on transactions with russian energy companies Rosneft and Gazpromneft.

The European Commission has been expressing its intention to abandon russian LNG for a long time, but the end of 2027 was recently called the likely date for such a step in Brussels.

However, the deadline was shifted amid pressure on the EU from US President Donald Trump, who accused European countries of "financing Russia's war" against Ukraine.

According to Greenpeace, refusal from russian energy resources threatens the EU with a similar dependence on the United States.

In the first half of 2025 alone, the EU imported 52.7 billion cubic meters of LNG from the United States.

President of the United States Donald Trump shamed the countries of the European Union for purchasing natural gas and oil from the aggressor country russia.
