Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet with European leaders on Thursday, September 4, in Paris, The Guardian reports. RBC-Ukraine informs.
"W're planning such a meeting” between Zelenskyy and European leaders, an AFP source said, adding that US President Donald Trump's presence "is not so far expected to be there.”
The source said that the main topic of the Paris talks will be security guarantees for Ukraine and promoting diplomacy, as the Russians are again shirking efforts to end the war.
Security guarantees
The issue of security guarantees for Ukraine from the West in the event of a ceasefire coming into force has been central to Ukraine's diplomatic negotiations in recent weeks.
Kyiv wants such guarantees to deter any future Russian attacks. Leaders have been openly offered to deploy European peacekeeping forces as a potential security measure after the end of the conflict.
Trump has made it clear that the United States may support any plan for European peacekeepers, but will not send American soldiers to Ukraine.
Russia has opposed any Western peacekeeping force. Last week, the Kremlin said it takes a negative view of such discussions.
Earlier, the Financial Times reported that leaders from a number of European countries would meet in Paris on Thursday, September 4, to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine. Among them are German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and von der Leyen.
