More than 40 states held an international meeting on restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which is effectively blocked amid the US and Israel's war against Iran. This was stated by British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, as reported by AP and written by UNN.

Details

According to Cooper, negotiators discussed political and diplomatic mechanisms for safely restoring passage through one of the key routes for global oil and gas trade. She stated that Iran "holds the global economy hostage," and the consequences of the blockade are already being felt by countries in various regions of the world due to spikes in oil and food prices.

According to Lloyd's List, since the start of hostilities on February 28, 23 attacks on commercial vessels have been recorded in the Persian Gulf, resulting in the deaths of 11 crew members. Shipping through the strait has almost stopped, with movement maintained mainly for individual tankers.

Europe prepares joint action after fighting ends

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that a forceful scenario for opening the strait is "unrealistic," and restoring movement is only possible through negotiations with Tehran after a potential ceasefire. France is promoting the idea of an international mission to escort tankers after the most acute phase of the conflict ends.

Meanwhile, the US did not participate in the negotiations. President Donald Trump previously stated that ensuring the security of the strait is not Washington's responsibility. Against this backdrop, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, the UAE, and dozens of other countries signed a joint statement calling on Iran to stop blocking the Strait of Hormuz.
