The European Union plans to completely phase out imports of Russian gas by 2027. Bloomberg reported this news, obtaining details of the EU's upcoming strategy. RBC-Ukraine informs.
The European Union is preparing to fully ban imports of Russian gas - both pipeline and liquefied - by the end of 2027.
The corresponding initiative is expected to be officially presented in June, sources familiar with the proposal told the news outlet.
After the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the bloc's countries reduced purchases of Russian gas from over 40% to approximately 19% of total imports.
Nevertheless, the EU still depends on Russian liquefied natural gas, the volume of which has risen to a record level.
A particular difficulty lies in long-term contracts with "take-or-pay" clauses, which prevent European companies from easily refusing to make purchases.
According to the preliminary plan, the European Commission will propose banning new gas deals with Russia and spot contracts starting in 2025.
At the next stage, existing long-term contracts will also fall under restrictions - the final ban is expected to take effect by the end of 2027.
Negotiations with Washington on expanding supplies are ongoing as part of broader trade agreements with Donald Trump's team.
According to media sources, the refusal of Russian gas should not significantly affect prices or the EU's energy security - the global liquefied natural gas supply is expected to increase in the coming years.
At the same time, the final wording of the initiative may still change before its publication in Strasbourg on Tuesday.
Refusal of Russian gas in EU
Earlier, the reports indicated that the European Commission will announce a detailed strategy for the phased refusal of Russian oil and gas imports on May 6.
The EU had pledged to abandon Russian fossil fuels by 2027 in response to Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, but a roadmap on how to do this has not yet been published.
